Aveyron is an unspoilt natural destination, ideal for camping holidays. The Tarn, Dourbie, Aveyron, Truyère and Lot rivers, among others, have carved out sumptuous landscapes of narrow gorges set between high rocky cliffs and lush green valleys in the limestone expanses of Aveyron and the Grands Causses region. In this wild region where vultures soar and orchids bloom, man has left his mark. It is the French department with the highest number of villages classified as “Most Beautiful Villages in France”. There are 10 across Aveyron. The best known is Conques. This medieval village, with its ochre stone and half-timbered facades, is a major stopping-off point on the route to Santiago de Compostela. Others, such as Couvertoirade, bear witness to the presence of the Templars on the Larzac plateau. A paradise for hikers and outdoor sports enthusiasts, Aveyron will also delight culture lovers with the exceptional Soulages museum in Rodez. We Love Camping offers you a selection of the best campsites in Aveyron, with pitches for caravans, tents or motorhomes around Millau, Rodez or Villefranche de Rouergue. Give in to temptation and set off to discover a region that is as beautiful as it is little-known.

A paradise for walkers and sports enthusiasts

With 1,250 kilometres of Grande Randonnée (GR) trails and 5,300 kilometres of Promenades et Randonnées (walks and hikes), Aveyron is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts. Ask at your campsite reception. They’ll be able to tell you which are the most beautiful walks around you. The region is also a delight for lovers of white-water sports and the great outdoors. The hiking trails are ideal for mountain biking, while the Dourbie, Tarn and Lot rivers are ideal for canoeing. The cliffs and rocky outcrops of the region are also renowned among rock-climbing enthusiasts. At the confluence of the Tarn and Dourbie rivers, Millau is famous for paragliding. In the evening, as the sun sets, it’s not unusual to see dozens of sails colouring the blue skies of southern Aveyron.

Camping le Muret, between the Viaur and Aveyron gorges

Camping Le Muret is a small campsite with 44 places, including 34 camping pitches, in the heart of the Ségala countryside. This is authentic countryside, nicknamed the land of 100 valleys because of its location between the Aveyron and Viaur valleys. The small lake at the heart of the campsite adds to the charm of the place, especially at the end of the day when the rays of the setting sun are reflected on its surface. The campsite restaurant serves local produce to remind you that Aveyron is also a land of good food.

Just outside the village of Nant, in the Dourbie valley, you’ll find Les 2 Vallées campsite. This campsite has a heated swimming pool and access to the Durzon river which runs alongside. The village of Nant is within walking distance of the campsite. From 26 August to 4 September, the Caravan Salon was held in Düsseldorf. With 235,000 visitors, this is Europe’s largest trade fair. It is also the first of the season and the opportunity for manufacturers to showcase their new products. And for us, it is the opportunity to discover the market trends.

For several years now, the van has been a real hit and now occupies several halls at the show. This year, however, the influence of vans seems to have spread to motorhomes and vans. And even to caravans. In fact, the folding roof, which is typical of converted vans, is now appearing on a number of larger vans as well as on some motorhomes. Bürstner, for example, used the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon to present its new Lyseo Gallery motorhome. The latter had already been successful, as the prototype that was to be presented at the CMT in Stuttgart last January (cancelled due to Covid) won several awards for its innovative design. It was the first official release for the newcomer of the Franco-German brand. And judging by the queues to visit the interior of the two models presented, the latter seems to have seduced the German public. Thanks to a system of pneumatic cylinders, the Lyseo Gallery folds and unfolds. When driving, this reduces the vehicle’s wind resistance and increases its aerodynamics. When stationary, the canopy can be folded up and provides a real “upstairs” extra room.

Luxury motorhome with pop-up roof from Hymer premieres at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon

Hymer also brought a motorhome concept to life at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon. Visitors to the show were able to see the first models of the Venture S, a luxury two-person motorhome based on a Mercedes Sprinter off-roader. With its living room that opens up to the outside world via the tailgate, this Hymer motorhome offers an attractive design. Like the Lyseo, it also has a pop-up roof. Here the pop-up roof is made of a pneumatic fabric that inflates in a few minutes. This has the advantage of protecting against noise, light and temperature fluctuations. Once in place, it offers a pleasant sleeping area that can be accessed via an integrated staircase. The two Venture S motorhome models presented at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon were a great success with the Germans who queued up to see them. However, there must have been more curious people than buyers in the queues. The Venture S is indeed offered for sale at more than €200,000!

A pop-up roof on the Hobby Beachy Air caravan

Last year, it seduced us at the Düsseldorf show. The Beachy from Hobby is still as nice as ever. And this year, the German caravan brand has taken its dynamic-looking caravan a step further with the prototype of the new Beachy Air. Very similar to the other models, with an opening at the rear that opens the living room to the outside, this one also has the originality of having a folding roof. However, there is no question of sleeping here. The pop-up roof “just” increases the height of the caravan inside. It must be said that this caravan has been specially designed for electric vehicles. It is therefore lighter (500 kg) and less high than the traditional Beachy (1.98 m compared to 2.65 m). These dimensions allow it to be towed by an electric vehicle. At the Düsseldorf show, it was presented with an ID Buzz, VW’s electric combi.

Small is beautiful: mini caravans are becoming increasingly fashionable

While the Düsseldorf show is still all about XXL motorhomes with a hall dedicated to luxury vehicles that you can park a car inside, at the other end of the market, mini-caravans are increasingly present in the aisles of the Düsseldorf exhibition centre. While some brands have been around for years, this year’s edition of 2022 has seen some newcomers such as the surprising mini caravan from Latvian company Forma Campers. We will have the opportunity to take a closer look at this model in the coming months.

One of the pleasures of a camping holiday is being able to stay with your caravan, tent or motorhome in a natural environment. On We Love Camping we have a selection of campsites by the lake. You can choose the one that suits you best, whether you are looking for a lake to fish in, a lake to swim in or a lake for water sports.

On most of the lakeside campsites on the We Love Camping website you can dive into the lake waters to swim and cool off on hot summer days. Lakeside campsites for fishing

On some lakeside campsites you can enjoy fishing. Whether you prefer fishing from the lake shore or fishing from a boat, there’s always a lakeside campsite to suit you.

You will find campsites on the shores of Lake Biscarosse, which is famous for sailing, or campsites where you can use the campsite’s canoes to go for a ride on the lake. All you have to do is choose the lakeside campsite that best suits your needs.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Notin caravan and motorhome brand, some sixty caravans and motorhomes from the 1930s to the 1980s were brought together in Azay-le-Rideau during the Whitsun weekend.

This gathering, organised by enthusiasts of retro camping and the Notin brand, should have taken place last year, but Covid wanted it otherwise. One year later, it was a great success and a nice tribute to the 100 years old brand (101 years old, after all!). On the banks of the Indre, a real timeless campsite was set up. It was not only possible to see beautiful Notin caravans from the last century, but also the vehicles associated with many old American cars that Notin caravan owners appreciated. These caravans, which never weighed less than a ton, had to be towed. In addition to the caravans and their cars, the pitches were decorated with vintage camping equipment. The oldest caravan at the rally, probably the oldest Notin caravan still in use, dated from 1938. Although caravans were in the majority at this event, a few motorhomes were also present. We offer you a short video review of this successful anniversary, with the presentation of the caravans of some of the enthusiasts present in Azay-le-Rideau.

Rethinking the caravan. This is the challenge that two young Bretons have set themselves. In their workshop in Auray, Morbihan, Vincent Clédic and Antoine Henaff have designed an original caravan, at the crossroads between van and caravan, the BiVan. This caravan with its original silhouette, presented for the first time at the Camper Van Weekend held at the end of April in Brissac, escapes any classification. It is too big to be classified as a mini caravan, but its small dimensions allow it to be parked on small camping sites or stored in a garage: 1.89 m high, 5.14 m long and 1.95 m wide. In comparison, it is slightly longer than an Eriba Touring (4.83 m), but also less high (2.26 m). This height makes a big difference, as it allows it to pass through the french tolls as a normal car and access car parks reserved for vehicles less than 2 metres high. All this for a weight of 900 kg (compared to 724 kg for the Eriba) and a GVW of 1200 kg.

Our campsites in France for caravanning

A caravan inspired by vans

It’s all in the name. The BiVan draws its inspiration from the vans from which it borrows the interior layout with a rear bench and two armchairs facing each other. The pleasant double side door is a tribute to the Volkswagen T1 combi offered by Westfalia in the 1950s. This heritage is hardly surprising. Before embarking on this project, Vincent Clédic was a salesman in the field of leisure vans. The BiVan has retained the folding roof of the vans, which has two advantages. Raised, it increases the ceiling height considerably. When lowered, it offers a very spacious bed of 160 cm x 200 cm. Combined with the bench seat, which converts into a 140 cm x 190 cm bed, this bed makes it possible for 4 people to go on a camping holiday in the BiVan. Perfect for families with two children. This caravan has a serious eye on the vans, but its interior space is greater than that of a conventional van. The space is used to install a bathroom and a chemical toilet.

A caravan that is easy to set up

The inspiration for the BiVan also comes from the American tear drops with a rear axle. This makes the use of rear kickstands unnecessary, as the jockey wheel completes the holding of the caravan. Two jacks at the front ensure that the trailer is levelled if necessary. This means that the caravan is quickly in place on the stage.

A caravan designed for camping holidays in all seasons

Thanks to its insulated cell, double-glazed windows and Truma heating with three outlets (two under the rear seat and one in the bathroom), the BiVan caravan remains comfortable even in spring or early autumn. Velcro fasteners are fitted to the pop-up roof cover so that an insulating cover can be attached and the BiVan can be used as for winter caravanning.

A 100% French caravan (or almost)

The Bivoak company that produces the BiVan is located in Ploeren, Brittany, not far from Auray. A large part of its components are therefore designed in Brittany, such as the furniture and the canvas. The electronics and the polyester cell come from Vendée and the chassis from Cherbourg. The only exception to the 100% French rule is the folding roof bed, which is made in Germany.

Prices and technical data

The BiVan has a starting price of €27,800. The full option version that we saw on the Camper Van Weekend is priced at €37,000. The options include a 150 W solar panel, embroidered and quilted leatherette upholstery and the Trum Combi 4E heater.

Length : 5,14 m
Width : 1,95 m
Height : 1,89 m
Weight : 900 kg
GVWR : 1200 kg

All in all, the BiVan caravan is very appealing with its pleasant interior space and original exterior design. As it made its first official appearance, two orders have already been placed with Bivoak. A good start as the two designers hope to sell ten of them in this first year. Given the curiosity aroused during the Camper Van Weekend, it’s a safe bet that they will succeed. While waiting to be able to try it on the road or to see it on the campsites, it is possible to discover it in the Bivoak workshop in Ploeren in Morbihan. However, it is advisable to let us know when you are coming. You will find the contact details of Bivoak on the website www.bivoak.fr.

Discovered on the caravan shows, we were seduced by the TakeOff folding caravan from the Dutch brand Easy Caravanning to which we devoted an article. We weren’t the only ones, by the way, as this easy-to-use folding caravan won the design award at the EUROPEAN INNOVATION AWARDS FOR THE CARAVANNING INDUSTRY. To find out more about this new generation of folding caravans, we went to Emmen in the Netherlands, where the TakeOff and the Holtkamper folding caravans (which we will tell you about shortly) are manufactured.

A new layout for the TakeOff folding caravan

To show us around the factory where the TakeOff folding caravans are produced and to tell us more about them, we met Maarten de Roos, managing director of the Campfire Group, which owns the Easy Caravanning and Holtkamper brands. He talked about the desire to create a hybrid product between the folding caravan and the traditional caravan with the TakeOff: a caravan that is as easy to tow as a folding caravan, but as quick to set up as a traditional caravan. We were also given the opportunity to present the new layout with a semi-fixed bed offered by TakeOff. This new layout was born out of a request from the brand’s first users. You can now choose between the two interior layouts with the semi-fixed bed or the two benches facing each other.

In addition to its attractive character, the TakeOff should appeal to a number of caravanners as it meets a demand of the moment since it can be towed by small vehicles (including a Fiat 500, although we are not certain that it is necessary to tackle the Alpine passes with such a hitch) and electric vehicles. The impact on autonomy is relatively small, between 25% and 30% according to Maarten de Roos.

There is no doubt that this folding caravan, which will start to appear on campsites in France and Europe, will appeal to many with its modern design and ease of use.

The TakeOff is available in 3 versions, the TakeOff Active (from £16,495), the TakeOff Sport (£18,495) and the TakeOff Xcite (£21,895). All three versions are built on the same base, but the two more expensive versions offer additional options. The TakeOff Xcite comes with the X10T awning, designed in collaboration with Karsten. An optional extra on the other two models. Prices for all options are available on the Easy Caravanning website.
