Are you planning to go camping in the Doubs? Don’t hesitate to choose the city of Besançon, renowned, among other things, for its charm, its setting and its watchmaking. As part of your camping holiday in Besançon, you can take the opportunity to explore the Comtoise capital. Between its green spaces, museums and citadel, France’s first green city is sure to surprise you.

Activities during your camping stay in Besançon: what to see and what to do in Besançon?

What to see in Besançon? If you are a true nature lover, a history buff or an architecture or art lover, the answer to this question may vary! Here are a few ideas of what you can do in Besançon during a camping holiday in the Doubs.

Discover the citadel of Besançon

An imposing structure overlooking the city, the citadel is one of the must-sees of a tourist stay in Besançon. Built by Vauban, a military architect who lived between the 17th and early 18th centuries, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most majestic citadels in France. With a total of 10 kilometres of ramparts dotted with half-bastions, towers and other guardhouses, the citadel of Besançon is Vauban’s masterpiece. The parapet walk, 600 metres long, 5 to 6 metres wide and 15 to 20 metres high, is a beautiful walk with breathtaking views of Besançon and the surrounding countryside. Inside the Citadel, the Saint-Etienne chapel now houses a sound and light system projected on giant screens. This immersive device lets you relive the history of the citadel, from the battles to the major construction works. Three museums also await you within the walls of the Citadel: the Resistance and Deportation Museum, the Comtois Museum (regional ethnography museum) and the Museum which brings together a zoological garden and a museum of life and earth sciences.

Explore the green spaces of Besançon

If Besançon is designated as France’s leading green city, it is notably because it has an average of 200 square metres of green space per inhabitant! Thus, greenery occupies nearly 30% of the city’s surface area. In particular, you will be able to escape to the heart of the vegetation in the Chailluz forest. Covering 1,780 hectares, this forest on the outskirts of the town offers you the opportunity to see deer, wild boar and fallow deer at close quarters. Picnic areas and footpaths have been created.

The Micaud walk, designed in English park style, with paths lined with paulownias, sophoras and tulip trees, is also worth mentioning. Micaud Park offers a splendid panorama of the Citadel. Moreover, at the Gare d’Eau, a former cargo port with marshes, you will find a vast green area with a promenade where you can spend some good time alone or in a group.

Finally, as part of your stay in Besaçon, explore on foot or by bike the 5 km of banks along the Doubs. A beautiful walk that mixes nature and heritage.

Dive into culture and history through Besançon’s museums

You can also discover Besançon by visiting its various museums. Start this dive into Besnaçon culture with a diversion to the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain (2, Passage des arts), where you will also find the Besançon art museum. There you will be able to admire an old brick river building, as well as various exhibitions throughout the year.

At the Time Museum, you will plunge into Besançon’s rich watchmaking tradition! Indeed, until the 20th century, 90% of the watches sold in France came from Besançon. The time museum is therefore the symbol of this know-how specific to the capital of French watchmaking. Located at 96, Grande Rue, at the level of the Granvelle Palace, this museum houses multiple collections of time-measuring instruments. These include the Leroy 01, one of the most prestigious watches of all time, and the Foucault pendulum, which materialises the rotation of the Earth in real time.

You can also visit the house where Victor Hugo was born (he lived there for 6 weeks when he was born), which has been transformed into a museum. A modern setting allows you to discover the subjects and struggles that dotted the life of the French writer and politician. In this flat at 140, Grande Rue, there is a room dedicated to children’s rights, a room dedicated to artistic freedom, etc.

Explore the old town, symbol of Besançon’s history

Between 2 nights at your campsite in Besançon, think about taking a tour of the old Besançon which includes the rich architectural heritage of Besançon. Especially at the “Boucle”. “La Boucle” is the nickname given to the historic heart of Besançon nestled in a meander of the Doubs. With almost 200 historic monuments spread over 238 hectares, it is the second most protected area in France. A stroll through its pedestrian streets will allow you to admire sumptuous facades, beautiful fountains or atypical hidden courtyards. Its private mansions are also worth a visit. Among them, the Hôtel Jouffroy, the Hôtel de Champagney or the Hôtel de Lavernette are worth a visit.

Camping à Besançon dans le Doubs

If your walk begins towards the Battant Bridge, you will be treated to the beautiful sight of the arcaded houses on the Quai Vauban. In the highest part of the Battant district, where the bridge is located, go to Fort Griffon to enjoy a panoramic view of the Besac, its bell towers, the surrounding hills, etc. from a wide angle. As you wander through old Besançon, don’t hesitate to push open the doors to discover the inner courtyards, with their remarkable outside staircases (historically, the staircases were arranged outside so as not to cut off the interior space).

Visit the Porte Noire (Black Gate) and Saint John’s Cathedral

About 16 metres high, the Porte Noire is a sort of triumphal arch, whose construction dates back to the 2nd century. Originally designed to celebrate divinities and victories, this Gallo-Roman monument was damaged over time, before being renovated to become one of the most beautiful buildings in Besançon today. Its columns decorated with vegetal motifs make its charm.

Located not far from the Porte Noire, the Saint-Jean Cathedral has also undergone multiple renovations. Today, it is one of the rare French cathedrals to have two opposing choirs, mixing several architectural styles (Romanesque, Baroque and Gothic). As a further testimony to the historical bisontinental know-how in clock-making, the cathedral of Saint-Jean in Besac houses an astronomical clock. Made in the 19th century under the supervision of Auguste-Lucien Vérité, a famous French watchmaker, it is hand-wound every day. In a millimetre-diameter mechanism, which you can observe from the inside during a guided tour, it operates the five dials of the cathedral.

There is something for everyone in Besançon. So don’t miss out on a visit to the capital of French watchmaking during your next camping holiday in the Doubs.

It is one of the most emblematic sites in Burgundy. Perhaps the most iconic. The ROCHE DE SOLUTRÉ, classified as the Grand Site de France since 2013, stands like a majestic sphinx in the middle of the vineyards of southern Burgundy, in the heart of the Mâconnais region. Made famous by François Mitterrand’s annual pilgrimage, this beautiful natural site of Burgundy deserves you to do like the French president and climb this rock.

A unique natural site

The rock of Solutré is located in the vineyards of Mâconnais. All around the rock and the village of Solutré-Pouilly lie, among others, the appellations of Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran. Two wines representative of this white wine terroir where the Chardonnay grape variety is king. These vines serve as a setting for the rock. This stone vessel rises to an altitude of 493 meters. Born from a phenomenon of rare geological erosion in the region, this limestone rock stands out in the middle of rolling and rounded landscapes, like its neighbors Vergisson or Pouilly. Before you start the climb of the rock, you can already admire it from the surrounding terrain. For photo lovers, it is probably at his feet that the Roche expresses all its greatness. From the Vergisson rock, you will also discover beautiful views of Solutré and the surrounding landscapes.

For the walk to the top of the rock of Solutré, you can park in the parking lot at its feet. The walk to the top takes about 1 hour round trip, with a vertical drop of 100 meters, and does not involve any major difficulty. At the start of the car park, a 4 km marked trail leads you to its summit. The itinerary is punctuated by reading tables that will inform you about the many facets of the place. Beware, however, the trail has many steps, so you will not be able to take strollers, bikes, etc.

Camping Roche de Solutré

Once at the top, the view is a reward. Your gaze embraces much of the Mâconnais. The landscape is divided into a multitude of vine plots. You can also see the villages that gave their names to the appellations: Solutré-Pouilly, Fuissé, Prissé, etc. On your right, Vergisson’s rock, which rises to 485 meters, completes the picture. To fully appreciate the view, a virtual orientation table is available on the Solutré Rando app (available on Ios or Android store). It will place for you the names of the surrounding villages and natural sites. If the sky is clear, it will even point you to the Alps in the distance.

An exceptional prehistoric site

In addition to its unique geological character, the Solutré Rock is also worth discovering for its rich historical interest. This site was indeed frequented by hunters more than 55,000 years ago. It is now home to one of the richest Paleolithic deposits in Europe. A museum of prehistory was created in 1987 at the foot of the Roche de Solutré to present the results of the excavations. Or, at least, some of the results of the excavations. Much has been scattered around the world in museums such as the British Museum. This museum, buried on the side of the rock, will reveal everything about prehistory in Southern Burgundy. The museum tour is complemented by an archaeological garden and a botanical trail to learn a little more about the geology and flora around the solutré rock.

Beaune is not the largest city in Burgundy. Dijon, Chalon-sur-Saône, Mâcon or Auxerre are ahead in this category. Forget its size, however, Beaune is the real CAPITAL OF THE WINES OF BURGUNDY. With the vineyards of Meursault, Montrachet, Vosnes-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin or Pommard at its doorstep, Beaune is at the heart of one of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. The Burgundians will even tell you in the heart of the most prestigious vineyard in the world! But we will not take part in this debate that has been tearing Burgundy and Bordeaux lovers apart since the dawn of time! One thing is for sure, appellations like Richebourg or Romanée-Conti make all wine lovers in the world salivate!

Small in size, Beaune is easily visited on foot. In half a day, you may have toured the city. However, expect a full day if you want to visit wineries and especially THE HOSPICES DE BEAUNE.

Winery visit to Beaune

During your walk in Beaune, you will have the opportunity to visit some cellars open to the public. The most spectacular cellars of Beaune are without a doubt the cellars of theMaison Patriarche. Their 5 kilometres of vaulted galleries running under the city of Beaune make them the largest wineries in Burgundy. Nothing less ! They are located on the site of an ancient convent and some date back to the 13th century. If, however, you want to taste and meet winemakers, give your preference to small estates. The reception will certainly be less professional, but more authentic. There are many areas around Beaune as well as some beautiful addresses in the city centre. Located in the ramparts of Beaune, the cellars of the Françoise André estate, for example, offer a pleasant tasting environment. You can enjoy some great Burgundy appellations. If your preference goes to these small areas, do not consider that they are open all day to the public. It is always best to call before you go to make an appointment or to check the availability of the winemaker.

The House of Climates of Burgundy

In Burgundy, when we talk about wine, we talk about Climates. Climates are these parcels of vine precisely demarcated for centuries and classified as UNESCO WORLD PATRIMOINE since 2015. To understand these climates, be sure to visit the House of Climates of Burgundy. Thanks to a film, a model of the vineyard and an exhibition embellished with augmented reality, the climates of Burgundy will no longer have any secrets for you. A playbook is provided for the children to make this visit fun.

Les Hospices de Beaune, jewel of Burgundy

Besides wine, the other reason to go to Beaune is its superb HOSPICES DE BEAUNE. These Hospices, whose glazed tile roofs are one of burgundy’s emblems, were created in the 15th century. This hospital, designed to accommodate the poor, is a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic architecture. It testifies to the golden age of the Dukes of Burgundy. The Hospices de Beaune owns a winery whose wines are sold every year in November, on the occasion of the sale of the Hospices de Beaune which attracts to Burgundy the whole world of international wine. Perfectly preserved, these Hospices are now visited. You can admire the large room of the poors its impressive frame in overturned boat hull, its Gothic chapel, the kitchen or the beautiful apothecary. The highlight of the visit is the polyptych of the Last Judgment, a masterpiece of medieval religious art by the Flemish painter Rogier Van der Weyden.

A lively and gourmet city

In Beaune you will find a wide selection of wine bars and restaurants where you will enjoy discovering Burgundy cuisine. The right addresses are many. We particularly appreciate the Caves Madeleine restaurant. A nice address with very reasonable formulas for lunch. If you visit Beaune on Saturday morning, take the opportunity to take a short tour of the market held in the square opposite the Hospices de Beaune. The opportunity to discover the city in a different way, by tasting some Burgundy specialties on the colorful stalls.

The Burgundy Wine Route

Putting aside the Chablis region around Auxerre, Burgundy is a narrow strip that stretches from Dijon to Mâcon. Along its hilly landscapes covered with vines, it offers appellations that make wine lovers salivate. Puligny, Volnay, Gevrey, Pommard and Meursault are all villages whose names evoke some of the greatest wines in the world. Not to mention the Romanée-Conti,

Info COVID 19: Due to Covid 19, the 2020 edition of Chalon in the Street is cancelled. It is replaced by “Les Rendez-Vous d’Automne”. From the end of August to the end of November, shows will take place during the weekends in Chalon-sur-Saône. Discover the calendar of festivities on the site of Chalon dans la Rue.

Every year, on the third Thursday in July, Chalon-sur-Saône comes alive to the sound of street performances on the occasion of Chalon dans la Rue. This festival is, along with the one of Aurillac, the largest street arts festival in France. For four days, you will have the opportunity to admire surprising stage performances that take place in the streets of the city with its main monuments for decoration.

Camping Chalon dans la Rue

Most of the shows take place in the historic heart of Chalon-sur-Saône, in the square of the town hall, in front of the cathedral or in the courtyard of the Museum of Photography, but also under the circus tents that stand in the four corners of the city. Theatre, dance, puppetry or circus will be on the programme of your weekend in Chalon-sur-Saône.

More than 1000 artists on the streets of Chalon-sur-Saône

Throughout the festival, from Wednesday evening to Sunday evening, more than 1000 artists from all over the world invade the city. All disciplines of street art are represented, from theatre to acrobatics to dance or music. Some of these shows take place at the street, you will discover them by walking through the pedestrian streets of Chalon-sur-Saône. Others move into the downtown courtyards and are held at specific times. The most popular shows, on the other hand, ask to arrive a little in advance in order to guarantee a place. For some of them, you’ll need to pay but a large number of shows remain free. Between the different scenes, walks through the city during the 4 days of Chalon in the Street.

Night shows

When night falls on Chalon-sur-Saône, it’s the turn of the night shows. Pyrotechnics and light games are often at the rendezvous of these shows which are often the highlight of the festival.

The night is also conducive to partying. While the downtown bars are sold out, the capitals on the outskirts of the downtown concerts attract a cheerful and colourful crowd.
