Bormes-les-Mimosas, a medieval village covered in flowers
Perched at an altitude of 150 metres, the medieval old town of Bormes-les-Mimosas dates back to the 11th century. Explore its cobbled streets lined with Provençal-style stone houses adorned with bougainvillea and cuberts, traditional covered passageways that run beneath the village houses. They lead you to breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and hidden squares. We particularly like the Place du Poulid Cantoun, which means “pretty corner” in Provençal. A well-deserved title, as this small square where the Clock Tower stands is so pretty. On Wednesday mornings, there is a market here. You will also find the Bormes History and Art Museum. Renovated in 2022, this museum immerses you in the history of the village over five floors, with a touchscreen tablet in hand, for an immersive experience. The Place de l’Isclou d’Amour is another must-see in medieval Bormes-les-Mimosas. This square, blooming with hibiscus and jasmine, offers a superb panorama of the port of Bormes and the islands of Levant and Port Cros. To reach the lower town of Bormes-les-Mimosas, be sure to take Rue Rompi Cuou, whose 83 steps connect the 12th-century town to the 16th-century town. The bustling Rue Carnot serves as the border between the two periods of Bormes-les-Mimosas.
The lower part of Bormes-les-Mimosas is home to several parks, which justify the village’s inclusion among those awarded the Villes et Villages Fleuris label. It has been awarded 4 flowers, the highest rating. The Cigalou park, with its avenues of eucalyptus and hundred-year-old cedar trees, covers more than 8,000 m². It adjoins Gonzales Park, which was awarded the label of “Remarkable Garden” in 2015. This botanical garden is planted with Australian vegetation. Among the species present are acacias, banksias, eucalyptus, grevilleas, hakeas and eremophilas. Don’t miss out on a stroll through the park during your camping holiday in Bormes-les-Mimosas.
Fort de Brégançon, a presidential palace to visit during your holiday in Bormes-les-Mimosas
At the edge of the village, in the Cabasson district, stands Fort de Brégançon on a peninsula. Made famous in 1968 when it became the holiday residence of French presidents, this impressive fortress is built on a site that has been used since ancient times, when the Ligurians built an oppidum there. It must be said that its location gives the site a real strategic advantage. However, it was between the 13th and 17th centuries that the current fort was built. Since 2014, it has been possible to visit this fort, which is steeped in both medieval and contemporary history. Indeed, all the presidents of the Fifth Republic have stayed there.

However, it is its beaches that are the main reason why holidaymakers choose this destination for a camping holiday on the French Riviera. It must be said that the village enjoys an exceptional setting. It nestles at the end of a bay that is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world. It is in this unspoilt environment that you will find several beaches where you can enjoy lazing on the shores of the Mediterranean. Among these beaches, Cabasson and Brégançon are set against the backdrop of the presidential fort, Estagnol beach is renowned for its fine sand and crystal-clear water, Gouron beach is shaded and lined with rocks, and Pellegrin beach, surrounded by pine trees, is hidden away in a wine-growing estate. Bormes-les-Mimosas, a destination between land and sea
Of course, people come to Bormes-les-Mimosas first and foremost for its beaches and the Mediterranean Sea. However, the village also enjoys an exceptional location, nestled against the Massif des Maures. From the village, it is just as easy to relax with your feet in the water as it is to go hiking in the Massif des Maures. There are numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty, so there is something for everyone. From the medieval village, you can set off on a hike to discover the Notre-Dame-de-Constance chapel. This walk takes about an hour and a half there and back and leads you to a magnificent viewpoint. Despite the elevation gain, this route is fairly easy. The 17-kilometre walk through the Dom forest is another “easy” alternative for hiking in the Maures mountains in the shade of cork oaks and stone pines.
For experienced hikers, the Maures massif offers other, slightly more challenging routes such as the Hauts de Bormes trail (14 km) or the Trois Cols trail (17 km). The latter takes you across the Caguo Ven, Gratteloup and Landon passes on a 6-7 hour route with significant elevation changes.
