Going on holiday means enjoying discovering different regions and their cultural and gastronomic specialities. In a wine-growing region such as Anjou and Saumur, we always enjoy tasting wines from local producers. To help us immerse ourselves in the wines of Anjou, the Isle Verte campsite in Montsoreau, 10 km from Saumur, has created a wine passport that brings together a selection of local winegrowers. Clément, the owner of the campsite, is always delighted to share his passion for wine with you.
The Isle Verte campsite is located on the banks of the Loire River in Montsoreau. Within walking distance, you will find two wine cellars where you can taste Anjou wines without having to take your vehicle. This is convenient when travelling by motorhome! These two wine cellars are Domaine de la Perruche, opposite the campsite, and the tasting cellar of Domaines de Nerleux and Arnaud Lambert. Clément, owner of the Isle Verte campsite, took us to the latter to taste two of his favourite wines from the region. He proved to be a fountain of knowledge about the wines of his region, which made the tasting fascinating. It was a delightful introduction to the wines of Anjou. For the rest of our stay, we used the wine passport created by the campsite. This passport lists 14 winegrowers in the Saumur and Montsoreau area. These include small family estates, but also larger wineries such as Grenelle and Akerman. You can write down your comments on the wines tasted at the different estates. It’s very convenient. At the end of your stay, you can select the wines you liked best and place your order directly at the reception of the Isle Verte campsite, and the winegrowers will deliver the bottles to the campsite. A real treat for wine lovers! In addition to the wine passport, the campsite has also developed an app for iOS and Android that allows you to navigate between estates and visit some of the most iconic sites in the Saumur region.
In addition to the nearby wine cellars, the Isle Verte campsite is located between the Loire River and vineyards. On the banks of the river, it is just a few hundred metres from the vineyard, which offers some lovely opportunities for walking or cycling. The vineyards stretch above the village of Montsoreau, nestled against the tuffeau stone walls carved out to form troglodyte dwellings. The campsite app lists some of these enjoyable walks. We tried a few in the spring, but they are definitely worth trying again in September when the vines take on their autumn colours.
Although nothing beats tasting wine in the cellar with the winemakers themselves, you can sample wines selected by Clément at the campsite bar. The 14 winemakers featured in the wine passport are indeed present on the bar and restaurant menus. Tastings are held regularly at the campsite. The winemakers come to meet the campers. Some tastings even include the sale of fouées, small bread rolls that are a speciality of Anjou and go wonderfully with Anjou wines.
